My family and I recently traveled to San Francisco for a weeklong vacation over spring break. We stayed in an apartment in the Richmond district of San Francisco, which is sandwiched between the Presidio to the north, and Golden Gate Park to the south. We were excited to try some of the excellent restaurants in the city, and assumed that we would be able to find healthy gluten-free options easily since it is such a large and diverse city. What we found, however, was an interesting dichotomy.
On the one hand, we were easily able to stock our refrigerator in our apartment with many of the gluten-free, dairy-free staples we rely on at home. Our local grocery, Delano’s IGA on Geary Boulevard, had gluten-free cookies and crackers, gluten-free tamari sauce (for our sushi obsession), gluten-free cereals, rice milk, and almond milk. The nearby specialty food store, Thom’s Natural Foods on Geary, also carried our favorite Udi’s gluten-free bread, muffins and pizza crusts. With these local resources, we were able to have our breakfasts at the apartment, pack our lunches for our daily outings, and occasionally have dinner at the apartment on evenings when we were too tired to go out.
Vacation is a time to get away, relax and have fun. But for families with food allergies, vacations can also be stressful, as finding restaurants that offer allergen-free meals is challenging.
