Dr. Schar Delivers Great Gluten-free Products
As we made our way back from Chicago to Colorado this summer, we made an overnight stop in Omaha, Nebraska. We needed to stock up on some food for the last day of our drive, so we stopped in at the Hy-Vee grocery at 7910 Cass Street. To our surprise and delight, we found MANY gluten-free options in the store, including an entire aisle with gluten-free packaged goods.
We were further surprised to see several offerings from Dr. Schär, an Italian-based company that makes pastas, crackers, cookies and more. Since our local stores in Colorado don’t currently carry Schär’s products, we decided to buy a variety of products for a taste test at home.
Italian Breadsticks: Thin, crispy and light, these were a hit in our family. They would be great on the side with soups or stews. I think they would also do well with a cheese dip.
Cocoa Wafers: Unbelievably good! These wafers were not too sweet, light and crisp, with a creamy chocolate-hazelnut filling. The package disappeared too quickly!
Snack Crackers: These thin and crispy crackers had an almost buttery flavor and a flaky texture. They would be a perfect addition to a fancy cheese tray, and yet, my kids enjoyed munching on them plain as well.
Spaghetti: The pasta was surprisingly disappointing. I thought that an Italian company would have gluten-free pasta perfected, but while it was OK, it wasn’t great. It had a more mushy texture than our favorite Tinkyada pasta, and the spaghetti broke apart as we were scooping it onto our plates.
For those of you (like us) who can only order Dr. Schär online, and are wondering if they are worth trying, I would say “absolutely!” I would pass on the pasta, but the cookies and crackers were very good, and I would definitely buy them again.
